FEAT

Personal fitness and wellness app

FEAT is a personal fitness training service that provides one-on-one training, group classes, and meal planning. It aims to promote overall wellness and help users achieve their fitness and wellness goals anytime, anywhere.

The problem

Users have difficulty in making time for fitness and wellness activities in their daily schedules.

The goal

Design an app that enables users to participate in training and wellness sessions at a schedule and location convenient for them.

User Research

Interviews were conducted and empathy maps created in order to understand the users and their needs. The primary user group identified through research was adults who are balancing work and other other responsibilities such as family.

Research revealed that time and location were not the only factor limiting users from working out or going to a gym. Other user problems include:

Motivation

75% or participants want to feel they are making progress.

"I feel unmotivated when I don't see results after all the hard work, muscle pains, and cost. I want to see progress, affirmations, report, next steps.."

Health & Safety

100% of participants prefer to workout at home.

"Gyms are all closed right now and even if they are open I don't feel safe going there. The city has so many cases of COVID that I'll only go out if absolutely necessary".

Wholistic Plan

75% or participants need a way to complement their workouts with wellness and nutrition.

"It's already confusing how many apps I use! One for meeting my trainer, another for messaging him, also a calorie counter, recipes, meditation.."

Meet the Users

PRIMARY
Isabelle

Age: 28
Occupation: Data Analyst
Family: Married, 2 children

Isabelle has a tight daily schedule spent on taking care of her family and her remote job. Her workout is her time to focus and take care of herself. She needs a streamlined and efficient system for her workout routine.

SECONDARY
Nick

Age: 48
Occupation:
Business owner
Family:
Single, 1 child

Nick manages a construction company and needs to stay at the work site for 4 days in a week. He also tends to neglect his eating habits due to demanding work schedule and is suffering with health issues.

Information Architecture

Wire frames

Taking the time to draft iterations of each screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements that made it to digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points.

CHALLENGE 1
Reminders and Timers

Customizable reminders in the form of alarms and notifications are important for users who are busy. Reminders are added by default after signing up for a program.

Timers and countdowns are also incorporated in the sessions.

CHALLENGE 2
Achievements

Users are kept motivated through positive messages and achievements.

Users can view after-session achievements and for those who are more goal-oriented, they can customize the types of data they can input and track.

Achievements over time are also shown in weekly or monthly charts.

CHALLENGE 3
Wholistic Approach

For users who want more than the physical approach to health and wellness, programs in nutrition, meal planning, yoga and meditation are available.

Takeaways

Having a background on the subject matter is not always an advantage. FEAT made me realize how easy it is to unconsciously fall back on personal experience. Producing this app has taught me to be more curious, to see things from other people's point of view, and to be more open to feedback.
